Removal
1.
Remove rack and pinion assembly from vehicle.
2.
Remove adjuster plug nut from adjuster plug, then adjuster plug from housing, Fig. 19.
3.
Remove adjuster spring and rack bearing with ``O'' ring seal attached.

Installation
1.
Coat parts with lithium grease, then install rack bearing with ``O'' ring seal adjuster spring and adjuster plug into housing.
2.
With rack centered in housing, turn adjuster plug clockwise until it bottoms in housing, then back off 35° to 45° and check torque on pinion.
Maximum pinion preload torque is 16 inch lbs.
3.
Install locknut to adjuster plug and tighten to 50 ft. lbs. while holding adjuster plug stationary, Fig. 20.
