Brake Drum: Testing and Inspection
RECOMMENDED TOOLS: J 21177-A Brake Shoe/Drum Clearance Gauge or equivalent.
1. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
2. Remove tire and wheel assembly. Mark relationship of wheel to axle flange to insure proper balance upon reassembly.
3. Remove brake drum. Mark relationship of drum to axle flange to insure proper balance upon reassembly.
4. Inspect drum inside diameter for deep scoring, heat checks or hot spots. Replace if necessary.
5. Measure drum inside diameter (ID) using Brake Shoe/Drum Clearance Gauge. Brake drums not meeting specifications must be replaced.
