Skylark V6-3100 3.1L VIN M SFI (1996)
Valve Cover: Service and Repair
LEFT
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain coolant.
2. Disconnect ignition wire clamps from coolant tube, then loosen coolant tube below thermostat housing at engine block.
3. Disconnect coolant tube at each end.
4. Disconnect coolant tube hose at water pump.
5. Remove coolant tube.
6. Remove tube from between rocker cover and air inlet hose.
7. Remove ignition wire guide.
8. Remove cover attaching bolts, then the cover. If cover adheres to cylinder head, shear off by bumping end of cover with palm of hand or soft
rubber mallet. If cover still will not come loose, carefully pry until loose. Do not distort sealing flange.
9. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean sealing surfaces on cylinder head and cover.
b. Use new gasket. Ensure gasket is seated properly in rocker cover groove.
c. Apply suitable sealer in notch in cylinder head.
d. Tighten attaching bolts to specifications.
RIGHT
1. Disconnect battery ground cable and drain coolant.
2. Disconnect vacuum hoses at plenum.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Disconnect EGR tube at crossover pipe.
5. Remove ignition wire guide, then disconnect ignition wire harness at plenum and spark plugs.
6. Disconnect two coolant hoses at throttle base.
7. Disconnect necessary electrical connectors at plenum.
8. Disconnect throttle, TV and cruise control cables.
9. Disconnect bracket at right side of plenum.
10. Disconnect brake booster vacuum supply hose from plenum.
11. Remove serpentine belt cover, then the belt.
12. Detach coolant recovery bottle and position out of way.
13. Remove engine struts, then pull engine forward and secure in forward position, using slave feature on strut.
14. Remove alternator attaching bolts and position alternator out of way.
15. Remove PCV valve.
16. Remove cover attaching bolts, then the cover. If cover adheres to cylinder head, shear off by bumping end of cover with palm of hand or soft
rubber mallet. If cover still will not come loose, carefully pry until loose. Do not distort sealing flange.
17. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean sealing surfaces on cylinder head and cover.
b. Use new gasket. Ensure gasket is seated properly in rocker cover groove.
c. Apply suitable sealer in notch in cylinder head.
d. Tighten attaching bolts to specifications.
