Skylark V6-3100 3.1L VIN M SFI (1996)
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Using engine support fixture tool No. J-28467, or equivalent, and an extra support leg, support engine, then remove transaxle. Refer to
Transmission/Drivetrain. Under Powertrain Management.
3. Remove flywheel.
4. Using suitable tool, remove seal by inserting tool in through dust lip at an angle, Fig.11, and pry seal out by moving handle of tool toward end of
crankshaft pilot, repeating around circumference of seal as necessary. Be careful not to damage crankshaft O.D. surface.
INSTALLATION
1. Check I.D. of bore for nicks or burrs and repair as required.
2. Inspect crankshaft for burrs or nicks on surface which contacts seal, repairing or replacing crankshaft as necessary.
3. Install seal as follows:
a. Apply engine oil to I.D. and O.D. of new seal, then slide seal over mandrel until back of seal bottoms squarely against collar of rear main
bearing seal installer tool No. J-34686, or equivalent, Fig.12.
b. Align dowel pin of tool with dowel pin in crankshaft by hand, then torque attaching screws to 45 inch lbs., Fig.12.
c. Turn "T" handle of tool so collar pushes seal into bore, turning handle until collar is tight against case.
d. Loosen "T" handle of tool until it comes to a stop, then remove attaching screws.
e. Ensure seal is seated squarely in bore.
4. Install flywheel, then the transaxle.
