Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
Coolant Fan Does Not Run
Refer to SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS/ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC DIAGRAMS, when performing diagnostic procedures on these systems.
1.
Connect a fused jumper wire between the Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL) connector terminal B and ground.
2.
Turn ignition switch to the RUN position. If coolant fan does not run, proceed to step 3. If coolant fan runs, problem is ECM related.
3.
With ignition switch in RUN position, backprobe with fused jumper wire between coolant fan relay terminal F and ground. If coolant fan does not
run, proceed to step 5. If coolant fan runs, locate and repair open circuit in dark green/white wire No. 335.
4.
Disconnect coolant fan relay connector, connect a test lamp between terminal D pink/black wire and ground. If test lamp lights, proceed to step 7.
If test lamp does not light, check fuse 9 and pink/black wire for open circuit.
5.
Connect test lamp between terminals D pink/black wire and F dark green/white wire. If test lamp lights, proceed to step 7. If test lamp does not
light, check dark green/white wire for an open circuit, repair if necessary. If circuit is satisfactory, problem is ECM related.
6.
Connect test lamp to terminal A red wire and ground. If test lamp lights, proceed to step 7. If test lamp does not light, check fusible link and red
wire for open circuit.
7.
With coolant fan relay connector disconnected, connect a fused jumper wire between terminal A red wire and terminal E black/red wire. If coolant
fan does not run, proceed to step 8. If coolant fan runs, replace coolant fan relay.
8.
With ignition switch in RUN and jumper wire connected as in step 7, connect a test lamp between terminal B black/red wire and ground. If test
lamp lights, replace coolant fan. If test lamp does not light, locate and repair open circuit in black/red wire.
9.
Connect test lamp between terminal B black/red wire and terminal A black wire. If test lamp lights, replace coolant fan. If test lamp does not light,
locate and repair open circuit in black wire.
Coolant Fan Does Not Turn Off With Ignition Switch In Run
1.
Disconnect coolant fan relay connector, then turn ignition switch to the RUN position.
2.
Connect a test lamp between terminal D pink/black wire and terminal F dark green/white wire. If test lamp does not light, replace the coolant fan
relay. If test lamp lights, check dark green/white wire for an open circuit. If dark green/white wire is satisfactory, problem is ECM related.
