Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
The rear main bearing oil seal can be replaced (both halves) without removal of the crankshaft assembly. Always replace the upper and
lower seal as an assembly. Install the seal with the lip facing front of engine. Extreme care should be exercised when installing this seal to
protect the sealing bead located in the seal outer diameter channel. An installation tool should be used to protect the seal bead when positioning
the seal.
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove oil pan and oil pump assemblies.
3.
Remove rear main bearing cap.
4.
Remove lower seal half, then the upper seal halve. Using a drift and hammer, tap upper seal half, then remove upper seal using pliers.
