Timing Chain: Service and Repair
Timing Chain Housing
Tools Required:
J 24420-B Crankshaft Balancer Puller
J 28467-A Engine Support
J 38122 Crankshaft Balancer Holder
Timing chain housing to cylinder block and cam housing gaskets (1, 77 and 78) can be replaced without removing the timing chain housing from the
vehicle.
Removal of the timing chain housing is only required when additional service is being performed on the timing chain housing.
Remove or Disconnect
1. Negative battery cable.
2. Front cover.
3. Raise the vehicle and support.
4. Heater hose from thermostat housing (this allows the cylinder block to drain completely).
5. Coolant pump assembly to timing chain housing nuts.
6. Timing chain and tensioner.
7. Chain housing to belt tensioner bracket brace.
8. Timing chain housing to block fasteners.
9. Four oil pan to front cover bolts.
10. Lowest front cover retaining stud from timing chain housing.

This stud catches on the body if not removed.
11. Lower vehicle.
12. Camshaft sprocket retaining bolts and washers while holding sprockets with J 39579.
13. Camshaft sprockets.

Sprockets are identical and interchangeable, no marking is necessary.
14. Chain housing to camshaft housing bolts.
15. Timing chain housing and gaskets.

It may be necessary to raise the engine slightly using J28467-A.
Inspect
a. The oil pan gasket silicone bead for:

Cuts or nicks.
^
Deformation.
^
Separation from the aluminum carrier.
