Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

1. Remove transaxle assembly as described under Automatic Transmission/Transaxle. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.  Replace in the

appropriate transaxle section.

2. On models with manual transaxle, remove clutch as described under Clutch, M/T. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain.
3. On all models, remove flywheel to crankshaft attaching bolts, then remove flywheel.
4. Remove oil pan to crankshaft rear seal housing attaching bolts.
5. Remove crankshaft rear seal housing to engine attaching screws, then remove housing and gasket, Fig. 24.
6. Support crankshaft rear seal housing on two wooden blocks of equal thickness with crankshaft side facing upward, then drive seal out through

transaxle side of housing.

7. Press replacement seal into housing using rear crankshaft seal installer No. J-36005, or equivalent.
8. Reverse procedure to install. Lubricate seal lips with engine oil prior to installing housing. Tighten crankshaft rear seal housing to specifications.
