Rocker Arm Assembly: Adjustments
ROCKER ARM ADJUSTMENT (with adjustable rocker studs).
This vehicle is originally equipped with non-adjustable rocker arm studs. If valve reconditioning is required, the non-adjustable rocker arm stud must
be replaced with an adjustable rocker arm stud and the following procedure must be performed.
CAUTION: The following adjustment procedure should be used when reconditioning a valve seat, and a new replacement (adjustable)
rocker arm stud has been installed.
Crank engine until mark on torsional damper is aligned with TDC mark on timing tab. Check to ensure engine is in the No. 1 cylinder firing position
by placing fingers on No. 1 cylinder rocker arms as mark on damper comes near TDC mark on timing tab. If valves are not moving, the engine is in
the No. 1 firing position. If valves move as damper mark nears TDC mark on timing tab, engine is in the No. 4 cylinder firing position and should be
rotated one revolution to reach the No. 1 cylinder firing position.
With engine in the No. 1 cylinder firing position, adjust the following valves: Exhaust- 1, 2, 3; Intake- 1, 5, 6. To adjust valves, back off adjusting
nut until lash is felt at push rod, then tighten adjusting nut until all lash is removed. This can be determined by rotating the push rod while tightening
the adjusting nut. When all lash has been eliminated, turn adjusting nut an additional 1-1/2 turns.
Crank engine one revolution until mark on torsional damper and TDC mark are again aligned. This is the No. 4 cylinder firing position. With engine in
this position, the following valves can be adjusted: Exhaust- 4, 5, 6; Intake- 2, 3, 4.
Install rocker arm covers, then start engine and check timing and idle speed.
