Using compressed air, blow out dirt from the quick-connect fittings.
9.
Disconnect the quick-connect fittings by squeezing the plastic tabs of the male connector and pull the connection apart. Repeat for the other
fitting.
CAUTION: DO NOT bend the fuel tank retaining straps, as this may damage the straps.
10.
With the aid of an assistant, support the fuel tank and remove the front fuel tank retaining strap attaching bolts, rear fuel tank retaining strap
attaching nuts and bolts, both fuel tank retaining straps and fuel tank.
11.
If it is necessary to remove rust or burrs from the fuel level meter fuel tubes: use emery cloth in a radial motion with the tube end to prevent
damage to the O-ring sealing surface.

Using a clean shop towel, wipe off the male tube ends.
^
Inspect all connectors for dirt and burrs. Clean or replace components/assemblies as required.
^
Fuel line O-rings for cuts, nicks, swelling or distortion. Replace if necessary.
12.
Using J 33431 Fuel Tank Sending Unit Remover and Installer, remove the fuel level meter assembly retaining cam, fuel level meter assembly and
O-ring from the tank. Discard the O-ring.
13.
Clean the fuel level meter assembly O-ring sealing surfaces.
14.
Remove the insulator pads from the fuel tank and spacers on the front fuel tank strap mounting brackets if damaged or a new tank is to be installed.
Note the locations for installation.
INSTALLATION:
1.
Install the insulator pads on the fuel tank and spacers on the front fuel tank strap mounting brackets in the same location as noted during
disassembly.
2.
Position a new fuel level meter assembly O-ring on the fuel tank.
CAUTION: Care should be taken not to fold over or twist the fuel pump filter when installing the fuel level meter assembly as this will restrict the fuel
flow. Also, assure that the fuel pump filter does not block full travel of the float arm.
3.
With the aid of an assistant, position and support the fuel tank. Install the fuel tank retaining straps, front attaching bolts and rear attaching bolts
and nuts. Tighten the front retaining strap bolts to 34 Nm (25 lb.ft), and the rear retaining strap nuts to 11 Nm (97 lb.in).
WARNING: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury:

Before connecting fuel line fittings, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male tube ends. This will ensure proper
reconnection and prevent a possible leak. (During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may
prevent proper reconnection if not lubricated).

DO NOT attempt to repair sections of nylon fuel lines. If damaged, replace.
^
If nylon fuel feed or return lines become kinked, and cannot be straightened, they should be replaced.
4.
Connect the fuel feed and return line quick-connect fitting to the fuel level meter:
a.
Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to the male connector tube ends.
b.
Push the connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place.
c.
Once installed, pull on both ends of each connection to make sure the connection is secure.
d.
Repeat for the other fitting.
5.
Install the vapor hose and clamp.
6.
Connect the fuel level meter electrical connector.
7.
Install the fuel tank vent tube and clamp at the fuel tank.
8.
Install the fuel filler tube and clamp.
9.
lower the vehicle.
10.
Add fuel and install the fuel filler cap.
11.
Connect the negative battery cable.
12.
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position for two seconds, then turn it OFF for five seconds. Again turn the ignition switch to the ON position,
and check for fuel leaks.
13.
The ECM will need to relearn the IAC valve pintle position following battery disconnection, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/ IDLE
LEARN PROCEDURE.
