Supplemental inflatable Restraint (SIR) Light Operation
(Additional Diagnostic and Repair information)
Models:
1999 Passenger Cars and Light Duty Trucks
When diagnosing a vehicle with an Illuminated "AIR BAG" warning light, or an "AIR BAG" warning light that does not Illuminate when the Ignition
key Is first turned to the "ON" position, begin by checking for diagnostic codes using a scan tool. If no diagnostic codes are present, inspect the Sensing
and Diagnostic Module (SDM) wiring harness electrical connector for the presence of a "shorting clip" (shorting bar). If the connector has a shorting
clip, verify proper operation using the following information:
Important:
Some vehicles control the illumination of the "AIR BAG" warning light via serial data communications from the 5DM. On those vehicles, use a scan
tool to determine if the 5DM is controlling the warning light
Shorting Clip Operation
When the SDM Is DISCONNECTED from the wiring harness connector, the shorting clip inside the wiring harness connector closes which completes
the circuit and turns the "AIR BAG" warning light "ON". When CONNECTED to the 5DM and with the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) installed,
the shorting clip inside the connector opens and the diagnostic circuitry inside the SDM controls the illumination of the light.
See the appropriate Service Manual for additional "AIR BAG" warning lamp diagnostic information.
Shorting Clip Replacement
At the present time, the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix uses a shorting clip that requires a special tool for replacement. If a shorting clip requires replacement
on this vehicle, order shorting clip service kit P/N 12167318. This shorting clip service kit includes the necessary tool and instructions required for
replacement.
Important:
The contents of service kit P/N 12167318 will repair up to ten (10) SDM shorting clips. On all other models equipped with replaceable shorting
clips, a special tool is not required. See Group 14.865 of the appropriate GMSPO part catalog for replacement shorting clip availability.
