Brake Master Cylinder: Description and Operation

DESIGN AND FUNCTION
The brake master cylinder is a composite design with conventional front to rear brake split. The primary piston provides fluid to the front brakes
and the secondary piston provides fluid pressure to the rear brakes. If pressure is lost in either system, the remaining system will function to stop
the vehicle.
BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR
Purpose
The brake master cylinder reservoir and cover used on these models are made of plastic. The cover snaps onto the top of the brake master cylinder
reservoir. A seal located between the cover and brake master cylinder reservoir to keep contaminants out of the brake fluid.
Operation
The brake master cylinder reservoir must be kept properly filled. This ensures adequate reserve fluid for braking pressure, make-up fluid for brake
lining wear and prevents air from entering into the hydraulic system. Brake fluid expansion is due to the heat absorbed from the brakes and engine
compartment as the temperature increases. The brake master cylinder reservoir should not be overfilled. See: Service and Repair
