Thermostat: Service and Repair

CAUTION: When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL (tm) coolant. If coolant other than DEX-COOL (tm) /5
added to the system the coolant will require change sooner at 50,000km (30,000 miles) or 24 months.

REMOVAL

1. The air cleaner from the vehicle. 
2. The coolant recovery or surge tank. 
3. Partially drain the coolant. 
4. The radiator hose from the thermostat housing.
5. The thermostat housing attaching bolts.
6. The thermostat housing.
7. The thermostat.

Clean the gasket mating surfaces.

INSTALL

1. The thermostat.
2. The thermostat housing to the intake manifold.
3. The bolts to the housing.

Tighten the thermostat housing retaining bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). 

4. The radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
5. The coolant recovery or surge tank. 
6. The air cleaner from the vehicle. 
7. Refill the coolant.

NOTE  To properly fill a system that has been completely drained requires the use of the air bleed vents located on the thermostat housing. 

8. Inspect For leaks.
