Ball Joint: Service and Repair
Upper

J 23742 Ball Joint Separator

-

Or Equivalent

CAUTION:  Floor Jack or stand must remain under the control arm spring seat during removal and installation to retain the spring and
control arm in position or personal injury may result.    

Remove or Disconnect 

1. Raise the vehicle and support it with safety stands.

2. Support the lower control arm with a jackstand.
3. The tire and wheel. 
4. The front brake caliper. Refer to Brakes and Traction Control.

Important:  Support the caliper with a piece of wire to prevent damage to the brake line.

5. The nut and bolt retaining the wheel speed sensor harness bracket to the upper control arm.
6. The cotter pin.

7. The stud nut from the upper ball joint.

a. Using J 23742 and apply pressure on the tool until the stud breaks loose.
b. Remove J 23742.
c. Pull the stud away from the knuckle.

8. The rivets from the upper ball joint.
