Camshaft: Service and Repair
Whenever camshaft is replaced, it is recommended that the valve lifters and oil filter be replaced and that the oil be changed. When installing
replacement camshaft, coat camshaft lobes with suitable molybdenum based assembly lubricant.
VAN
1.
Disconnect batteries, then remove headlight bezels, grille and front bumper.
2.
Remove lower valence panel and hood latch mechanism.
3.
Remove coolant recovery bottle, then the upper tie bar.
4.
On models equipped with A/C, disconnect refrigerant lines and remove condenser on 1982---85 models, or compressor on 1986---87 models.
5.
On all models, disconnect low coolant sensor electrical connector.
6.
Disconnect all hoses and lines from radiator, then remove radiator and fan assembly.
7.
Remove oil pump drive unit.
8.
Remove cylinder heads, then the alternator lower bracket.
9.
Remove water pump, crankshaft pulleys and torsional damper.
10.
Remove timing cover plate and water pump.
11.
Rotate crankshaft to align timing marks, then remove injection pump driven gear and inner baffle.
12.
Mark relationship between injection pump and front cover for assembly reference, then remove front cover, fuel pump and valve lifters.
13.
Remove injection pump drive gear, timing chain and crankshaft gear.
14.
Remove camshaft retainer plate and the camshaft.
15.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque camshaft retainer plate bolts to 20 ft. lbs.
