Glow Plug: Service and Repair

WARNING:  Cover the edges of metal and insulation around the opening in the floor panel with a protective covering, such as tape. Failure to
do so may result in personal injury.

NOTE:  The glow plugs can all be replaced by reaching up form underneath the vehicle using a 3/8 inch deep-well socket to remove the plugs. If
any diagnostic checks are going to be done first the engine cover must be removed from inside the vehicle to provide access to the controller and
system wiring. The following procedure takes into account engine cover removal.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Negative battery cable.
2. Instrument panel lower extension and engine cover. Refer to Instrument Panel, Gauges and Warning Indicators.
3. Glow plug lead wires from the glow plugs on the right side of the engine.
4. Glow plugs from right side using 3/8-inch deep-well socket.
5. Glow plug lead wires and glow plugs from cylinders #5 and #7.

From under the vehicle:

6. Glow plugs lead wires and glow plugs from cylinders #1 and #3.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

From under the vehicle:

1. Glow plugs into cylinders #1 and #3.

Tighten

Glow plug to 18 Nm (159 lb. in.).

2. Glow plug lead wires.

From inside the vehicle:

3. Glow plugs into the rest of the cylinders.

Tighten

Glow plugs to 17 Nm (13 lb. ft.).

4. Glow plug lead wires.
5. Engine cover and instrument panel lower extension.
6. Negative battery cable.

INSPECT

Wire routing, making sure the lead wires are not rubbing against the exhaust manifold or any part that may harm the wire insulation.

7. Splash shield in the right front wheel well.
8. Right front tire.
