Subject:
DOOR HANDLE MALFUNCTION
Model and Year:
1988-90 C/K TRUCKS
Some 1988-90 C/K pickups may experience a broken exterior door handle after extended use. This could result in the handle becoming disconnected
from latch push rod and door could not be opened from the outside. This condition was caused by insufficient material in the door handle to withstand
the additional forces required to open the door after the mechanism had been contaminated with dirt, ice or debris. In order to repair this condition, a new
design door handle has been released.
IMPORTANT:
Several running changes were previously incorporated into the door handle design prior to changing the part number. The new
(latest) design was produced for a period of time under the previous part number, prior to changing to the new part numbers
listed below.
Dealers servicing trucks for this condition can confirm they are utilizing the latest design parts using the following criteria:
Figure 1
1.
Inspect the handle mechanism on service parts that may be in dealer inventory under
Part Number 15607105 (LH) or 15607106 (RH). If dimension A (refer to Figure 1) measures 1/2", door handle is of the latest design and
SHOULD be used as a repair for this condition.
Handles measuring 3/8" at dimension A are of the previous design and SHOULD NOT be used to repair this condition. These parts may be
returned to GMSPO for credit.
2.
All handles serviced under Part Numbers 15667243 (LH) and 15667244 (RH) are of the latest design and should be used to repair this condition.
