Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair
Front Cover Replace
1.
Remove secondary timing belt tensioner mounting bracket and idler pulleys as outlined under SECONDARY TIMING BELT SERVICE.
2.
Remove engine front lift hook.
3.
Remove engine torque strut bracket from frame and pull strut and bracket out of the way.
4.
Remove upper radiator support.
5.
Remove righthand cooling fan heat shield then the cooling fan assembly.
6.
Remove lower radiator hose from coolant pump.
7.
On models with manual transaxles, remove front air hose at air pipe.
8.
On all models, remove heater hose at front cover and heater pipe bracket at frame.
9.
Raise and support vehicle.
10.
Remove right tire and wheel assembly then the engine splash shield.
11.
Remove crankshaft pulley and damper as outlined under CRANKSHAFT PULLEY & DAMPER
12.
Drain engine oil into a suitable container and remove oil filter.
13.
Remove A/C compressor mounting bolts.

Remove lower front cover bolts, Fig. 14.
15.
On models with automatic transaxles, remove drive axle assembly.
16.
On all models, remove rear alternator bracket then the starter motor.
17.
Lower vehicle.
18.
Remove intermediate timing belt sprocket as outlined under INTERMEDIATE SHAFT BELT SPROCKET & OIL SEAL.
19.
Remove upper alternator retaining bolts.
20.
Remove forward lamp relay center screws and position relay center aside.
21.
Remove oil cooler hose from front cover.
22.
Remove water pump pulley.
23.
Remove front cover upper bolts then the front cover and gasket.
24.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply GM sealer part No. 1052080, or equivalent, to lower edges OD sealing surface of front cover.
b. Apply suitable thread sealant to large bolts.
c. Tighten attaching bolts to specifications.
