SPARK PLUG BOOTS MAY BE DAMAGED BY MISHANDLING
Model and Year:
1991 LUMINA WITH 3.4L (Z-34 ONLY) ENGINE
Figure 4
The spark plug boots on the 1991 W Car with the 3.4L (VIN Code X) engine (see Figure 4, page 6D4-6 of the Service Manual) use a "T" handle design.
They are designed to reach into the head, and to be easily removed without tools. Because of tolerance stack-up conditions, the boot may be lower in the
head than it should be, making it difficult to remove. The boot is made of plastic, which may break if pried with a screwdriver.
DO NOT pry on one side of the "T" with a screwdriver to remove it. The boot can usually be removed by hand by twisting to loosen it, then pulling out.
If the "T" is too low to allow a good grip, pliers may be used if handled carefully, or use TWO screwdrivers to apply pressure to both sides of the "T"
handle at the same time.
In addition, care should be used when installing the boot, to avoid tearing it. Make sure that the boot is correctly located over the spark plug end before
applying pressure to seat the boot.
