Crankshaft: Service and Repair
Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Replacement

Removal Procedure 

1. Remove the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
2. Remove the engine flywheel. Refer to Engine Replacement.

Important:  Do not nick the crankshaft sealing surface when removing the seal.

3. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal.

3.1.

Insert a flat-bladed tool through the dust lip at an angle.

3.2.

Pry the crankshaft rear oil seal out by moving the handle of the tool towards the end of the crankshaft.

3.3.

Repeat as necessary around the crankshaft rear oil seal.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J34686 Rear Main Seal Installer

1. Entirely coat the new crankshaft rear oil seal with engine oil.
2. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal onto the J34686.
3. Install the J34686 onto the rear of the crankshaft. Snugly tighten the screws in order to ensure the seal will be installed squarely over the

crankshaft.

4. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal to the crankshaft.
5. Tighten the wing nut on the J34686 until it bottoms.
6. Remove the J34686 from the crankshaft.
7. Install the engine flywheel. Refer to Engine Replacement.
8. Install the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission and Drivetrain.
