Modifying Seal Protector

SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED (or equivalents)

J-24319-01, Tie rod end puller.

^

J-28733, Front hub spindle remover.

^

J-28671, Inner hub seal installer or J-34657-A, W/JA power heavy duty brakes.

^

J-34754, Seal protector (modified).

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
2. Place jack stands under frame or suspension support.
3. Lower vehicle slightly so the weight of the vehicle rests on the jack stands and not on the control arms.
4. Tire and wheel assembly.

CAUTION:  Care must be exercised to prevent drive axle joints from being over-extended. When either end of the shaft is disconnected,
overextension of the joint could result in separation of internal components and possible joint failure. Drive axle joint seal protectors should be
used any time service is performed on or near the drive axles. Failure to observe this can result in interior joint or seal damage and possible joint
failure.

5. Place J-34754 (modified) on the drive axle joint.
6. Insert drift punch through rotor.
7. Clean drive axle threads of all dirt and lubricant, then remove hub nut and washer.
8. Caliper bolts and support caliper.
9. Rotor.

10. Attach J-28733 and separate hub and drive axle.
11. Three (3) hub and bearing retaining bolts, shield, hub and bearing assembly and O-ring.

Using a punch, tap seal toward engine. When seal is removed from the steering knuckle, cut it off the drive axle using side cutters.

NOTE:  The factory seal is installed from the engine side of the steering knuckle. The service replacement is installed from the wheel side of the
steering knuckle.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. New hub and bearing seal in steering knuckle using the proper installer.
2. Lubricate hub and bearing seal with grease.
3. New "O" ring around hub and bearing assembly.
4. Hub and bearing assembly into steering knuckle and tighten bolts to 95 Nm (70 lb ft).
5. Rotor.
6. Caliper and tighten bolts to 51 Nm (38 lb ft).
7. Hub nut and washer.
8. Insert drift punch through rotor and caliper. Tighten hub nut to 260 Nm (185 lb ft).
9. Remove seal protector.

10. Tire and wheel assembly.
11. Raise vehicle slightly and remove the jack stands.
12. Lower vehicle.
