Vacuum Brake Booster: Service and Repair
Power Brake Unit Replace
HYDRO-BOOST
Pump brake pedal several times with engine off to deplete accumulator of fluid.
1.
Remove two nuts attaching master cylinder to booster, then move master cylinder away from booster with brake lines attached.
2.
Remove three hydraulic lines from booster. Plug and cap all lines and outlets.
3.
Remove retainer and washer securing booster pushrod to brake pedal arm.
4.
Remove four nuts attaching booster unit to dash panel.
5.
From engine compartment, loosen booster from dash panel and move booster pushrod inboard until it disconnects from brake pedal arm. Remove
spring washer from brake pedal arm.
6.
Remove booster unit from vehicle.
7.
Reverse procedure to install. To purge system, disconnect feed wire from injection pump. Fill power steering pump reservoir, then crank engine
for several seconds and recheck power steering pump fluid level. Connect injection pump feed wire and start engine, then cycle steering wheel
from stop to stop twice and stop engine. Discharge accumulator by depressing brake pedal several times, then check fluid level. Start engine, then
turn steering wheel from stop to stop and turn engine off. Check fluid level and add fluid as necessary. If foaming occurs, stop engine and wait for
approximately one hour for foam to dissipate, then recheck fluid level.
EXC. HYDRO-BOOST
1.
Remove vacuum hose from check valve and master cylinder retaining nuts.
2.
Pull master cylinder forward so it clears mounting studs and move to one side. Support cylinder to avoid stress on hydraulic lines.
3.
Remove power unit to dash nuts.
4.
Remove brake pedal pushrod retainer and disconnect pushrod from pin.
5.
Remove power unit from vehicle.
6.
Reverse procedure to install.
