Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
CamShaft Position (CMP) Sensor
Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor
The camshaft position (CMP) sensor is located in the cylinder head next to the number 4 fuel injector. The CMP sensor is a signal generator that is
composed of a magnet, a coil and an iron core. The powertrain control module relies on the AC signal from the CMP sensor in order to optimize ignition
timing and detect engine misfire.
Operation
The CMP sensor signal rotor (2) is part of the intake camshaft (1) arid has one tooth located on the outer circumference. When the CMP sensor signal
rotor (2) rotates past the CMP sensor (3) a pulse is initiated in the sensor circuitry The AC signal generated by the CMP sensor is then sent to the
powertrain control module.
