Centering ball surface. If it show signs of wear beyond smooth polish, replace it.
Clean

All plastic from grooves of all yokes. It usually is easier to remove plastic if a small pin or punch is driven through injection holes first.
NOTICE: When a centering ball requires replacement, all ball seat components must be replaced also. A separate ball and seat service kit is
available. The kit has two seat springs and the "Longer" spring must be discarded.
DISASSEMBLE
1. Clamp shaft in a bench vise and install Ball Puller, J 23996-2, over ball.
2. Tighten puller nut finger tight.
3. Apply a light coat of multi-purpose grease to the jaws of the ball puller tool.

This will reduce friction between the jaws and the inside surface of the tool sleeve.
4. Tighten nut until ball is removed from stud.
ASSEMBLE
1. Position new ball on stud.
2. Position Ball Installer Tool, J 23996-1, against ball and drive with hammer until ball bottoms on stud.
3. Replace ball seats and components
Ball Seat Replacement
DISASSEMBLE
1. Remove centering ball.
2. Pry grease seal from ball seat housing.
Important: Take care not to damage seal bore when prying seal.
3. Remove large washer, three seats, small washer and spring from seat housing.
4. Wash bore of housing thoroughly with mineral spirits to remove all traces of old lubricant and dry thoroughly with compressed air.
ASSEMBLE
1. Obtain ball and seat kit, discarding the "longer" of the two springs in the kit.
2. Liberally grease the I.D. of the seat housing with grease supplied in kit.
