Upshift Indicator: Testing and Inspection
Description
The shift indicator light, which is located in the instrument panel on manual transaxle models, is used to urge the driver to upshift at the proper
moment. The shift indicator light activates as soon as vehicle conditions become suitable for operation in the next higher gear, then de-activates as the
clutch is released for upshift.
The engine parameters used to activate the shift indicator light are engine speed, engine load and coolant temperature. The engine load is sensed as a
function of throttle valve position by a sensor built into the carburetor.
Diagnosis & Testing
1.
Check function of transaxle switch by moving the gearshift lever with ohmmeter connected to switch terminals.
2.
The 1st-2nd switch is satisfactory if it closes when shifted into 1st or 2nd gear position.
3.
The 3rd-4th switch is satisfactory if it closes when shifted into 3rd and 4th gear position.
4.
If the switch does not close as specified, replace switch as required.
