Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
Radiator cooling fan operation is controlled by a cooling fan relay, radiator mounted thermosensor and the A/C compressor cycling switch. Battery
voltage is applied to the fan relay control coil through the restart relay and voltage is applied to the relay switch circuit through a non-switched fuse in
the fuse panel. The relay control coil circuit is completed to ground either through the thermosensor or through the A/C compressor clutch cycling
switch. During normal operation the thermosensor contacts close when coolant temperature is above 185°F and voltage is applied to the cooling fan
motor through the relay switching circuit. When coolant thermosensor contacts are open and the temperature is below 185°F, the thermosensor cooling
fan does not operate. However, when the A/C clutch is energized the fan relay coil circuit is completed to ground through the A/C switch and the cooling
fan operates regardless of coolant temperature.
