Heating and Ventilation
General Information
Air enters the heater and ventilation system and is heated before being discharged through the proper ducts and outlets into the passenger compartment.
Within the heater case, doors guide the airflow in response to the positions of the temperature lever and the mode lever in the heater control unit. The
mode lever operates the air flow control doors. The doors route the heated, unheated, fresh, or recirculated air through the various ducts and outlets. The
following list identifies the duct and outlet locations:

Modes Description
Ventilation Mode: In the ventilation mode, air flows from the Instrument Panel (IP) outlets.
Bi-Level Mode: In the bi-level mode, airflow is divided between the IP air outlets and the floor air outlets. Warmer air is delivered to the floor air
outlets than the IP air outlets.
Heat Mode: In the heat mode air flows from the floor air outlets, along with a small amount of air flow from the windshield defroster outlets.
Heat/Defroster Mode: In the heat/defroster mode, a portion of the airflow is from to the windshield defroster outlets while the remaining airflow is
from the floor and side window air outlets.
Defrost Mode: In the defrost mode, most of the airflow is from the windshield defroster outlets. There is a small amount of airflow from the side
window outlets and from the floor outlets.
System Description
The heater system delivers warm air to the passenger compartment after the engine reaches normal operating temperature. Outside air and air from the
passenger compartment pass through the heater core. Hot engine coolant heats the air, which travels to the passenger compartment through ducts and
outlets. The heater control unit allows the operator to operate the heater and ventilation system. Four levers are provided for control of the following
heater operations:

The temperature lever

The temperature lever controls the temperature of the air delivered to the passenger compartment.

The lever opens and closes the air mix door, which controls the amount of air passing through and around the heater core.

The mode lever
The mode lever allows the driver to select from the following choices of air output:

Floor heat
