Power Rack and Pinion and Pump Leak Diagnosis
When troubleshooting these kinds of complaints check for an external leak in the power steering system.
1. Wipe suspected area dry.
2. Check for overfilled reservoir.
3. Check for fluid aeration and overflow.
4. Check hose connections and O-rings. Replace or tighten if necessary.
5. Verify exact point of leakage. The point from which the fluid is dripping is NOT necessarily the point where the system is leaking.
NOTE: In some cases, the leak can easily be located. But, seepage-type leaks may be more difficult to isolate.
6. To locate seepage leaks, use the following method:

With the engine off, wipe dry the complete power steering system.

Check the fluid level in the pump's reservoir. Add fluid if necessary.

Start the engine and, with the aid of an assistant, turn the steering wheel from stop to stop several times.
CAUTION: DO NOT hold it at a stop for any length of time, as this can damage the power steering pump.

Find the exact area of the leak and repair.
7. When service is required:

Clean leakage area upon disassembly.
^
Replace leaking seal.
^
Check component sealing surfaces for damage.
^
Tighten bolts to specifications, where required.
^
Bleed system.
