Duty Cycle Purge Solenoid Noise

MODELS:
1993 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision

DISCUSSION:

Normal Duty Cycle Purge Solenoid (DCPS) operation creates a solenoid vibration which can transmit through the body to the passenger compartment.
The vibration creates a low frequency clicking noise that can easily be mistaken for an engine knock or a failed valve lifter. The noise is most noticeable
with the engine warmed up, and at idle. It can be heard best in the front passenger seat coming from the floor under the glove compartment. The noise
problem is most noticeable when the solenoid is hot (such as: hot weather driving, heavy stop and go traffic). The noise problem can also be noticed
when the solenoid is cold, below 25 degrees F. The solenoid bracket and isolator were redesigned to help eliminate this noise inside the vehicle.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves the replacement of the solenoid bracket and isolator assembly.

1.

Remove the solenoid(s) and bracket from the right shock tower. There are two different styles of brackets. The 3.3L bracket mounts only the
DCPS. The 3.5L bracket mounts the DCPS and a Manifold Tuning Valve Solenoid.

Remove the solenoid(s) from the old bracket assembly. Install the solenoid(s) on the new bracket P/N 4740419 so that the word "top" is facing up
when installed. A small amount of grease will aid in the assembly. This service part will replace both the 3.3L and 3.5L original bracket. Torque
the mounting bolts 60 to 90 in. lbs.

NOTE:
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE DCPS BE INSTALLED ON THE BRACKET SO THAT THE WORD "TOP" IS FACING UP, OTHERWISE, THE
DCPS WILL NOT FUNCTION.

Care must be taken to make sure that the solenoid does not ground on anything that can transmit noise to the body, such as: A/C plumbing,
electrical junction box, or mis-routed wiring harness.
