Hose/Line HVAC: Customer Interest
A/C Compressor/Lines - Refrigerant Leaks
NO.: 24-29-93
GROUP: Air Conditioning
DATE: Dec. 3, 1993
SUBJECT:
A/C Refrigerant Leaks
MODELS:
1993 - 1994 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision/LHS/New Yorker
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Air conditioning refrigerant loss; refrigerant oil at the bottom of the compressor with no apparent cause.
DIAGNOSIS:
Leak check A/C system with an approved leak detector (refer to TSB 24-20-93) in an environment with as little air movement as possible. Pay special
attention to the A/C plumbing line connections to the compressor manifold ("Snoop" liquid leak detector is a good indicator of some refrigerant leaks,
but it is not always accurate; i.e., won't bubble if not on the leak, or may bubble at acceptably low levels of leaks).
NOTE:
SUCTION LINE FITTING LEAKS MAY NOT SHOW UP WHILE THE COMPRESSOR CLUTCH IS ENGAGED, BUT RATHER AFTER THE
CLUTCH HAS BEEN DISENGAGED AND THE REFRIGERANT SYSTEM PRESSURE BEGINS TO EQUALIZE.
If leaks are present at the A/C plumbing line connections to the compressor, perform the repair procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair involves inspecting the A/C plumbing-to-compressor o-ring groove surface and replacing A/C lines as necessary.
1.
Disconnect the leaking A/C plumbing line(s) from the compressor manifold as described in the appropriate service manual.
2.
Remove the O-ring using "fingers only" and examine the groove for the presence of aluminum shavings, chatter or slivers, especially in the bottom
of the groove. If any defects exist, the line must be replaced. Do not attempt to repair an o-ring groove.
3.
Install the line(s) to the compressor manifold using new o-rings as described in the appropriate service manual.
POLICY:
Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
