SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Heater core leakage at the rubber seal between the core and plastic tank (fin and tube-type heater core) may be caused by excess oil in the cooling system
. If oil contamination was a contributing factor to the core failure, the oil must be removed prior to installation of a new heater core or subsequent
failures will occur.

DIAGNOSIS

Verify the heater core leak by using the Engine Cooling System Leak Test described in the "Cooling System" section of the appropriate service manual
with the following exception. Test first at 5 PSI and then at 15 PSI (one type of a leak may not be evident at 15 PSI). If a leak occurs at 5 PSI, check all
cooling system joints. When heater hoses are clamped close to the cowl panel, coolant may run into the passenger compartment, giving the false
impression of a heater core leak, therefore, it is important to check the hose clamps at these two joints. If a leak is still indicated and there is an oily film
on the windshield or coolant on the carpet, then replace the heater core.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1.

Replace the heater core according to the procedure outlined in the appropriate service manual.

2.

If the vehicle has over 2,000 miles, assume the coolant is contaminated with excess oil. Locate and repair the leak.

3.

Drain and clean the cooling system per service manual instructions. It is not necessary to power flush the system.

NOTE:

WHEN CLEANING THE SYSTEM, CONNECT THE HEATER HOSES TOGETHER WITH A HOLLOW JUMPER (NOT
THROUGH THE NEW CORE) AND PUT THE CLIMATE CONTROL MODE SELECTOR IN HEAT MODE TO INSURE THE
WATER VALVE IS COMPLETELY OPEN.

4.

Advise customer to follow service manual recommendations for proper maintenance of the cooling system.
