through the lower, larger hole in the steering wheel and the horn wire through the smaller hole at the top. Make sure not to pinch wires.

Be careful to index the flats on the hub of the steering wheel with the formations on the inside of the clockspring.

Don't hammer, pound, or beat on steering column or steering wheel.

3.

Replace damper assembly on units equipped with automatic transaxles.

4.

Replace retaining nut and torque it to 61 N-m (45 ft.lbs.)

5.

Remove clockspring set screw from clockspring and place it in steering wheel storage area. Tighten screw carefully so not to cause damage to the
tether/ warning label. (Torque to 4 in. lbs.)

6.

Connect horn wiring lead.

7.

Connect clockspring wiring lead to airbag module and secure the module to the steering wheel.

8.

Connect DRB II to ASDM diagnostic connector. (Located at right side of console on G/J-body and at right kick panel on M-body.)

9.

From PASSENGER side of vehicle, turn the ignition key to "ON" position. Exit vehicle with DRB II.

10.

After checking that no one is inside the vehicle, reconnect the negative battery terminal.

11.

Using the DRB II, read and record any fault data including stored faults.

12.

Refer to the Diagnostic Test Manual if any faults found in previous steps.

13.

Erase fault codes using DRB II.

NOTE:

IF PROBLEMS REMAIN, FAULT CODES WILL NOT ERASE.

14.

From the PASSENGER side of vehicle, turn the ignition key to "OFF", then "ON", and observe the instrument cluster airbag light. The light
should go on for 6 to 8 seconds, then go out. The system is functioning normal.

NOTICE:

IF AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT EITHER FAILS TO LIGHT, OR GOES ON AND STAYS ON; THERE IS A SYSTEM
MALFUNCTION. YOU MUST REFER TO THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST MANUAL AND USE THE DRB II TO PROPERLY
DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM.

Steering Column Clockspring

WARNING:

BEFORE BEGINNING ANY AIRBAG SYSTEM INSTALLATION OR REMOVAL PROCEDURES, REMOVE AND ISOLATE THE
NEGATIVE (-) BATTERY CABLE (GROUND) FROM THE VEHICLE BATTERY.

THE SPECIFIED FASTENERS, SCREWS, AND BOLTS MUST NEVER BE REPLACED WITH ANY

SUBSTITUTES. ANY TIME A NEW FASTENER IS NEEDED, YOU MUST REPLACE WITH THE CORRECT ONES PROVIDED IN THE
SERVICE PACKAGE OR ONES LISTED IN THE PARTS BOOKS.
