Brake Master Cylinder: Service and Repair
Master Cylinder Replacement
1. Disconnect brake fluid sensor electrical connector from master cylinder reservoir.
2. Position a drain pan under the master cylinder, then drain master cylinder.
3. On models with separately mounted reservoir, disconnect reservoir hoses from the master cylinder.
4. On all models, use a suitable wrench to disconnect brake lines from the master cylinder. Plug all lines and fittings.
5. Remove master cylinder-to-brake booster attaching nuts.
6. Pull master cylinder outward and away from brake booster.
7. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:
a. Prior to master cylinder installation, check brake booster pushrod-to-primary piston clearance as described under Hydraulic System
/Adjustments, and adjust if necessary.
b. Fill master cylinder reservoir, then bleed hydraulic system as described under Hydraulic System/Service and Repair/Brake System Bleed.
c. Check adjustment of brake pedal as described under Hydraulic System/Adjustments, and adjust if necessary.
