Timing Belt: Service and Repair
CAUTION: While the timing belt is not installed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution
to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact.
REMOVAL
1. Remove timing belt front cover as outlined under "Front Cover, Replace".
Fig. 26 Crankshaft & Camshaft Sprocket Mark Alignment.
2. Align crankshaft and camshaft sprocket marks then loosen timing belt tensioner attaching bolts.
3. Remove timing belt and tensioner. If timing belt is to be reused, mark running direction for installation reference.
4. Inspect timing belt for cracks, missing teeth, hardened rubber and abnormal wear.
INSTALLATION
1. Position timing belt tensioner in a soft-jawed vise, then slowly compress tensioner plunger into tensioner body.
2. With tensioner plunger compressed into body, insert a suitable locking pin through holes in tensioner body. This will hold plunger in position until
after tensioner has been installed on engine.
