Suspension - Clunking/Loose Lumber Sound on Bumps

Suspension Clunking, Chuckle or Loose Lumber Sound When Driving Over Bumps

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves replacement of the front struts and if required rear shocks.

NOTE:

This bulletin applies to RT vehicles equipped with a domestic Normal Duty Suspension (sales code SDA) built prior to March 1, 2008

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some customers may experience a clunking or chuckle like sound from the front or rear of the vehicle when traveling over small inputs (bumps and dips)
in the road. The sound may be described as loose boards (lumber) striking one another. This condition is more noticeable at lower vehicle speeds when
background noise is less.

DIAGNOSIS:
Locate a safe area that has small bumps such as broken concrete or asphalt. Drive the vehicle at a vehicle speed below 25 MPH (40 KMH). If front or
rear clunk / loose lumber-like sounds are present perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1.

Replace both front struts with pn 68042864AB. Refer to DealerCONNECT/TechCONNECT for detailed service information. From the Service
Info tab select: 2 - Suspension - Front Suspension > Strut Assembly > Removal > Disassembly and Assembly and Installation.

2.

Inspect the rear shock absorbers for part level. Rear shock absorber part numbers 04721686AB, 04721690AC or 04721691AC or lower nic levels
should be replaced with the part numbers listed in the parts table above. Are rear shocks at a lower level than those listed in the parts table above?

a.

Yes >>> Go to step 3

b.

No >>> Do not perform step 3.

NOTE:

The right and left sides of the vehicle must have the same level components to minimize suspension sounds and maximize ride feel.

Replace both rear shock absorbers. Refer to DealerCONNECT/TechCONNECT for detailed service information. From the Service Info tab select:
