Fuel Pressure: Testing and Inspection

1.

Ensure battery has 12 volts or more.

2.

Disconnect battery ground cable. When battery ground cable is disconnected, all stored diagnostic codes in the ECU will be erased.

3.

Remove union bolt from fuel filter.

4.

Install a suitable pressure gauge to the fuel hose and fuel filter, Fig. 7.

Install check connector test harness and connect the F terminal to ground, Fig. 2.

Connect battery ground cable and turn ignition On. Do not start engine at this time.

Pressure gauge reading should be 33-40 PSI.

If fuel pressure is not as specified, proceed as follows:
a. Check for blockage of fuel return pipe and hose and/or hose between pressure regulator and surge tank.
b. If no blockage is found, replace pressure regulator.

Turn ignition off, wait three minutes then read fuel pressure. Pressure should be 25.6 psi or more on Rocky models, and 35.5 psi or more on
Charade models. If not as specified, check for leakage or seeping fuel injectors.

10.

If injectors are not leaking or seeping, proceed as follows:
a. Connect suitable hose to vacuum hose pipe of pressure regulator, connect other end to MityVac or suitable vacuum device.
b. Turn ignition switch On, then observe pressure while applying vacuum. Fuel pressure should drop in correspondence to vacuum.
c. Replace pressure regulator if fuel pressure does not decrease.
