Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

Fig. 1 Exploded View Of Drum Brake Assembly.

Refer to Fig. 1 when servicing drum brake system.

1.

Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.

2.

Remove brake drum as previously described.

3.

Remove tension spring using tension spring remover No. 09703-30010-000 or equivalent.

4.

Detach tension spring using a suitable screwdriver.

5.

Remove shoe hold-down spring and pin (leading side), then remove the brake shoe, parking brake shoe strut and tension spring (leading side).

6.

Remove shoe hold-down spring and pin (trailing side), then the parking brake cable from the parking brake shoe lever.

7.

Detach C-ring, using a suitable screwdriver or combination pliers, then remove parking brake shoe lever and automatic adjusting lever-related
parts.

8.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

a. Ensure brake components have been installed correctly.
b. Temporarily install brake drum, depress brake pedal repeatedly and fully, until no clicking sound occurs.
c. Ensure brake drum turns lightly.
