Starter Drive/Bendix: Testing and Inspection
Direct Drive Starter
When performing the following tests, apply battery voltage for only three to five seconds to prevent coil burn out.
1.
Disconnect lead wire from solenoid terminal.
2.
Connect suitable leads from negative battery terminal to starter body and solenoid switch terminal.
3.
Connect suitable lead from positive battery terminal to terminal ST. If drive pinion does not move out, replace solenoid.
4.
Remove negative battery lead from solenoid terminal. Drive pinion should remain in the out position. If not, replace solenoid.
5.
Remove negative battery lead from ground of starter. Drive pinion should retract into drive housing. If not, replace clutch assembly and return
spring.
