Exhaust Manifold: Service and Repair
Engine Intake & Exhaust Manifold Attaching Points
REMOVAL
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable and drain coolant system.
2.
Remove air cleaner and disconnect all vacuum and fuel lines and electrical connectors from carburetor.
3.
Disconnect throttle linkage, then remove power steering pump drive belt.
4.
Disconnect power brake vacuum hose from manifold, if equipped.
5.
Disconnect hoses from water crossover, then raise and support vehicle and disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold.
6.
Remove power steering pump and position aside. Remove intake manifold support bracket.
7.
Remove EGR tube and the intake manifold retaining screws.
8.
Lower vehicle and remove intake manifold.
9.
Remove exhaust manifold retaining nuts and exhaust manifold.
CLEANING & INSPECTION
1.
Discard gaskets and clean all gasket surfaces on both manifolds and on cylinder head.
2.
Test gasket surfaces of manifolds for flatness with a straight edge. Surfaces must be flat within .006 in. per foot (0.15 mm per 300 mm) of
manifold length.
3.
Inspect manifolds for cracks and distortion.
INSTALLATION
1.
Install a new intake and exhaust manifold gasket coated lightly with sealer #3419115 or equivalent on manifold side.
2.
Set exhaust manifold in place. Torque retaining nuts starting at center and progressing outward in both directions to 200 in. lbs. (23 Nm). Repeat
this procedure until all nuts are at specified torque.
3.
Set intake manifold in place.
4.
Raise vehicle and torque retaining screws starting at center and progressing outward in both directions to 200 in. lbs. (23 Nm). Repeat this
procedure until all screws are at specified torque.
5.
Install EGR tube and the intake manifold support bracket.
6.
Install the power steering pump assembly.
7.
Install the exhaust pipe to the manifold and the water hoses to the water crossover.
8.
Install power brake vacuum hose to the intake manifold.
9.
Install power steering pump belt and connect throttle linkage.
10.
Connect electrical wiring and fuel lines to the carburetor. Install the air cleaner.
11.
Fill the cooling system and reconnect the battery.
