Camshaft: Service and Repair
Camshaft Replacement
When removing camshaft or bearings, it is required that the engine be removed from chassis.
REMOVAL
1. Remove intake manifold as outlined under Intake Manifold/Service and Repair, cylinder head covers, front cover as outlined under Timing
Cover/Service and Repair and timing chain as outlined under Timing Chain/Service and Repair.
2. Remove rocker arm or rocker shaft assemblies.
3. Remove pushrods and lifters as outlined under Lifters/Service and Repair. Mark for installation reference.
4. Remove distributor, then lift out oil pump/distributor driveshaft.
5. Remove camshaft thrust plate, noting location of oil tab.
6. Install long bolt into front of camshaft to facilitate removal, then remove camshaft from engine.

INSTALLATION
1. Lubricate camshaft lobes and bearing journals.
2. Install camshaft within two inches of final position in cylinder block.
3. Install tool No. C-3509, or equivalent as shown.

4. Hold tool in position with distributor lock plate screw. Tool should remain installed until camshaft, crankshaft sprockets and timing chain have
been installed.
5. Install camshaft thrust plate and chain oil tab attaching screws, ensuring tang enters lower right hole in thrust plate, then tighten screws to
specifications. Top edge of tab should be flat against thrust plate in order to catch oil for chain lubrication.
6. Reverse remaining removal steps to install. If camshaft is being replaced, all lifters must be replaced.
