NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 5.9L MPI ENGINE AND AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Vehicle may exhibit a light to heavy surge after torque convertor lockup, typically 40-55 MPH. This surge may feel like an intermittent engine miss, and
is more noticeable on smooth roads and higher ambient temperatures.
Diagnosis
DIAGNOSIS:
Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) or the Scan Tool (DRBII or III) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedure Manual, verify that all
engine/transmission systems are functioning as designed. If Diagnostic Troubles Codes (DTC's) are present, record them on the repair order for future
reference and repair as necessary.
In some instances, incorrect distributor indexing may cause a similar engine miss or surge. When diagnosing customer complaints of perceived engine
miss or surge, verify that the distributor is in the correct location following the DRB Diagnostic Procedure in the 1995 Ram Truck Service Manual
(Publication No 81-370-5108), Page 8D-27.
After verifying the distributor indexing, road test the vehicle. The vehicle should be fully warmed up. Test drive on a smooth road 40-55 MPH. Note
roughness after torque convertor lock up. Unlock torque convertor by lightly tapping the brake. The engine RPM should increase 200-300 if unlock
occurs. If the surge/bucking condition is eliminated when torque convertor is unlocked, perform the repair procedure.
