M/T - Hard Shifting/Gear Clash/Gear Selection Difficulty
NO: 21-16-94
GROUP: Transmission
DATE: Sep. 9, 1994
SUBJECT:
Hard Shifting, Gear Clash or Gear Selection Difficulty
MODELS:
1994 (AN) Dakota/Dakota Cab & Chassis
1994 (BR) Ram Pickup
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A NV3500 MANUAL TRANSMISSION.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Hard shifting, gear clash, or gear selection difficulty may be noticed. Shift mechanism may exhibit excess lateral (side-to-side) movement, which would
cause the shifter to not center at the 3 - 4 shift gate. The excessive play condition is caused when the antirotation bracket bends.
DISCUSSION:
Transmissions after the serial numbers listed below use a new shift lever tower assembly, P/N 04773173 BR and P/N 04773174 AN. The anti-rotation
bracket and bias spring are not required with the new tower assemblies (however it is not necessary to remove the anti-rotation bracket or bias spring
during this repair). These transmissions should be serviced using procedures from the 95 model year Service Manual.
DIAGNOSIS:
1.
Inspect the transmission for a serial number prior to:
The serial number is located on the bell housing of the transmission (Refer to Figure 1).
2.
Inspect the shifter for self-centering (bias) in the neutral position at the 3 - 4 shift gate. The correct shifter bias returns the shifter to the 3 - 4 gate
when the shifter is released by the operator.
3.
If the transmission is built prior to the above serial number and the shift lever mechanism exhibits excessive side-to-side play, proceed with the
repair procedure.
