Water Pump: Service and Repair
When it becomes necessary to remove a fan clutch of the silicone type, the assembly must be supported in the vertical position to prevent leaks of
silicone fluid from the clutch mechanism. This loss of fluid will render the fan clutch inoperative.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system and remove windshield washer reservoir from fan shroud.
2. Remove fan shroud mounting bolts and upper radiator hose from radiator, then remove fan/fan drive assembly from water pump by rotating
mounting nut counterclockwise (as viewed from front).
3. If water pump is being replaced, do not unbolt fan blade assembly from thermal control fan drive.
4. Remove fan/fan drive and shroud as an assembly, then remove serpentine drive belt as outlined in "Belt Replacement" under "Serpentine Drive
Belt."
5. Remove water pump pulley and all hoses from pump.
6. Remove water pump bolts, then loosen clamp at pump end of bypass hose and slip hose off water pump while removing pump from vehicle. Do
not remove bypass hose clamp.
7. Discard water pump gasket.
8. If water pump is being replaced, remove heater hose fitting from pump body. Note position for installation reference.
9. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten all bolts to specifications.
