Refrigerant Oil Level Check

The oil level of these compressors should be checked whenever refrigerant has been lost due to leakage or through normal system servicing.

RV2 COMPRESSOR

1. Connect gauge and manifold assembly and slowly discharge refrigerant system. Near completion of discharge, flush dipstick with existing freon.

This will ensure dipstick is clean and at approximately the same temperature as refrigerant oil in compressor sump.

2. Carefully remove compressor oil sump filler plug, then insert dipstick into hole until it bottoms in sump. When removing compressor oil sump

filler plug a face shield should be worn. Refrigerant dissolved in compressor oil could cause oil to percolate out through filler plug
opening.

3. Remove dipstick and measure oil level, refer to A/C Specification Tables. Add refrigerant oil as necessary to bring oil level within limits. Oil level

should be checked only after refrigerant has boiled off and oil surface has stabilized.

4. If any of the following components are to be replaced, it will be necessary to add additional oil to system. Evaporator, 2 ounces; Condenser, 1

ounce; Filter Drier, 1 ounce.

5. On all models, install filler plug, then evacuate and recharge system.

C-171 COMPRESSOR

1. Discharge refrigerant from system.
2. Remove compressor from vehicle, then invert compressor and allow oil to drain from suction and discharge ports.
3. Add 5 fluid ounces of clean refrigerant oil through suction port, then install compressor and connect suction and discharge lines using new gaskets.
4. Evacuate and recharge system. The C-171 compressor contains 9 to 10 ounces of refrigerant oil on 1982 - 84 models, or 7 to 7 1/4 ounces of

refrigerant oil on 1985 - 86 models. While the A/C system is in operation, the oil is carried through the entire system by the refrigerant.
Some of the oil will be retained in the various components of the system. If a replacement evaporator coil is installed, add 2 ounces of
refrigerant oil to system. If a replacement condenser coil or filter-drier is installed, add one additional ounce of refrigerant oil to system.
This additional oil must be added to compensate for oil removed with the component. Before installing a replacement compressor, drain
and measure oil from old compressor and adjust level in new compressor to equal this amount.
