SYMPTOM/CONDITION
If the air conditioning compressor clutch slips on disengagement or has failed for no apparent reason, or if the air conditioning blower motor operates at
all speeds except low, it will be necessary to check the diode at the blower motor resistor block for proper performance. The function of the diode is to
allow current flow in one direction and block the current in the other direction.
Diode Performance Test
The diode is located on the air conditioning blower motor resistor block between cut off terminal 1 and terminal 2.
1.
Using an OHM meter or continuity light, test the diode by placing the positive lead of the tester on cut off terminal 1 and the negative lead on
terminal 2.
2.
If there is no continuity (diode open), there would be no low blower speed and the resistor block must be replaced.
3.
If there is continuity (diode closed), reverse the tester leads.
4.
If there is continuity (diode closed in reverse direction), there would be clutch drag and the resistor block must be replaced.
A good diode will show continuity from the positive connection at terminal 1 to the negative connection at terminal 2. There should be no continuity
when the tester leads are reversed.
