Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Description and Operation
The clockspring is screwed to a plastic mounting platform on the steering column behind the steering wheel. The clockspring is used to maintain a
continuous electrical circuit between the instrument panel wiring harness and the drivers airbag, the horn, and the vehicle speed control switches, if
equipped.
This assembly consists of a flat, ribbon-like electrically conductive tape which winds and unwinds with the steering wheel rotation. The clockspring must
be properly centered when it is reinstalled on the steering column following any service procedure, or it could be damaged. The clockspring cannot be
repaired. If the clockspring is faulty, damaged, or if the airbag has been deployed, the clockspring must be replaced.
