SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some 1990 - 91 vehicles equipped with the A-604 transaxle built prior to transaxle date code K XXX 0651 XXXX may experience an ATF fluid
foaming (burping) condition. The foaming conditions may result in fluid exiting the transaxle at the fill tube and/or the transaxle vent.

The foaming condition is most likely to occur if high internal transaxle temperatures are experienced. High internal temperatures may occur; while the
vehicle is operating in high ambient temperatures when towing a trailer, fully loaded, driving up a grade, or driving into a strong head wind.

The foaming condition may be the result of a reaction between the RTV used in transaxle production and the ATF.

DIAGNOSIS:

The foaming (burping) condition cannot normally be duplicated at the dealership. The customer complaint will usually describe a small accumulation of
oil under their vehicle after it has been operating in high ambient temperatures when towing a trailer, fully loaded, driving up a grade, or driving into a
strong head wind.

Inspect the transaxle. If there is evidence of transmission fluid in the area of the fill tube and/or vent, perform the repair procedure.

If the fill tube and vent are dry, inspect the transaxle and engine for source of possible coolant, engine oil or transaxle fluid leaks and repair as required.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This repair involves cleaning the transaxle case and adding the anti-foaming additive to the transaxle.

1.

Check and adjust the transmission fluid level as required.

2.

Using a suitable cleaning solvent, clean the transaxle case, removing all traces of transmission fluid residue.

3.

Add two, 1/2 ounce containers of anti-foaming additive PN 4549637 through the transaxle fill tube.
