FRONT WHEEL DRIVE MODELS EXC. 1988 COLT WAGON

1. Raise and support rear of vehicle and remove wheel.
2. Remove dust cap, then on all except 1985-87 Colt and 1988 Colt hatchback and sedan, remove cotter pin and pin retainer.
3. Remove bearing retaining nut, washer and the outer bearing, then pull hub and drum assembly from spindle.
4. Pry oil seal from rear of hub and remove inner bearing.
5. Drive bearing inner races from hub using suitable drift.
6. Clean hub and bearings with suitable solvent and blow dry with compressed air. Inspect components noting the following:

a. Check fit of bearing outer races in hub. If bearings have "spun" and races are loose in hub, hub should be replaced.
b. Inspect bearings and replace if damaged, scored or excessively worn.
c. On 1985-87 Colt and 1988 Colt hatchback and sedan, install bearing retaining nut on spindle until nut is 0.08-0.12 inch from inner end of

threads, then measure torque necessary to loosen nut. If loosening torque is not at least 48 in. lbs., replace nut.

7. Press new races into hub using suitable drivers.
8. Pack inner and outer bearings with suitable grease, working grease into rollers from wide end of bearing with palm of hand. Keep bearings

covered until installation.

9. Pack center of hub with grease, install inner bearing in hub, then press new oil seal into hub and coat seal lips with grease.

10. Mount hub and drum on spindle, install outer bearing, washer and nut, as equipped, then adjust wheel bearings as outlined.
