SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Engine may exhibit a knocking noise when at full operating temperature, during light to medium acceleration.
NOTE:
THIS NOISE IS NOT A SPARK KNOCK (PING), BUT IS MORE LIKE A BEARING NOISE. THIS REPAIR IS NOT FOR A COLD KNOCK
CONDITION.
DIAGNOSIS:
Using the DRB II (Scan Tool) and appropriate diagnostic procedure manual, verify that all vehicle engine systems are functioning as designed (no fault
codes are present). To diagnose the above condition, with a fully warmed engine, disconnect the number 2 injector, and bring the engine under a light to
medium acceleration (1700-2000 RPM and 8" - 12" of manifold vacuum). If the noise is greatly diminished or eliminated, proceed with the repair
procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair involves replacement of the Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC - Powertrain Control Module) with a revised one.
1.
With the ignition key in the OFF position, disconnect the battery.
2.
Remove the SBEC (Powertrain Control Module) as outlined in the appropriate service manual, and replace the SBEC (Powertrain Control
Module) with unit called out in PARTS REQUIRED.
3.
Connect the battery.
