Compass/Temperature Module Actuator Tests

After 4) ACTUATOR TESTS is selected from the COMPASS/TEMP MENU, the display will change to read as follows:

--ACTUATOR TESTS-- 
1) FIELD STRENGTH
2) INTERNAL TEST

Press the down arrow once more to view the rest of the menu. The screen will display:

---ACTUATOR TESTS--
1) FIELD STRENGTH
2) INTERNAL TEST
3) VF DISPLAY TEST

Enter the number that matches the desired actuator test. The screen will display:

---xxxxxxxxx--
ACTUATING/
COMPLETED

NOTE:  The top line will show the name of the selected test.

To determine whether or not any of these tests pass or fail, you must watch the compass/temperature display as the test is being actuated. Each test
passes or fails as described below.

1) FIELD STRENGTH This test measures the magnetic field strength at the fluxgate; i.e., the amount of vehicle magnetism.

The letter "N" is displayed in the compass portion of the display, and a number corresponding to the north/south magnetic field strength is
displayed in the temperature portion of the display.

The letter "W" is displayed in the compass portion of the display, and a number corresponding to the east/west magnetic field strength is
displayed in the temperature portion of the display.

For proper compass operation, the magnetic field strength numbers should be between 1 and 14. A 7 or 8 is ideal (no vehicle magnetism), while
numbers approaching 1 or 14 show that the vehicle is highly magnetic.

NOTE: If the compass/temperature module is not receiving information from the CCD bus, "F1" will be displayed 15 seconds after this test is
selected.

2) INTERNAL TEST - This test checks the electronic circuits of the compass, temperature, and CCD bus. The test passes if "D2" is displayed.
The test fails if "F2" is displayed.

3) DISPLAY TEST - This test lights up each vacuum fluorescent segment in the compass/temperature display one at a time, then turns it off. The
segments are lit in the following order:

"N" and "1"     "NE" and "2"     "E" and "3"
"SE" and "4"     "8" and "5"     "SW" and "6"
"W" and "7"     "NW" and "8"
"CAL", with "8" in the 2nd digit position and "F".
"VAR", with "8" in the 3rd digit position and "C".

If any segment fails to light up, the test fails.
